Hi there!

I am a beginner baker who wants to dabble in pastry making, but isn't sure where to start. Is there a good type of pastry dough? Or what would you suggest?

I'd suggest you to start small! Try simple baking recipes, learn to bake the basics, like for example the crust for pecan pies and quiches ;) That's how I started, then later moved onto cakes. ''Empanadas are also a fun thing to try :)

E moaned as are great for beginners and you can experiment with all kinds of fillings. I am still trying to master a caramel apple filling at the moment.

What are empanadas exactly? And I've been wanting to learn how to make pie and stuff but I'm worried I'll screw up and it'll be a waste of ingredients :(

Oh, an empanada is a treat that is very popular in Latin America and some middle eastern countries. Actually there are many ways to make them, different fillings, both sweet and salty. I prefer the sweet ones, of course :) You can bike them or fry them. Take a look at those pics of different kinds of ''empanadas''

By the way, those beauties aren't hard to make at all! I can tell you it's all about the dough, the filling doesn't matter that much if you are preparing the sweet ones, because you can just use marmalade... whatever flavor your prefer, but that's it! It's all in the dough!

Lol, yeah ;) When I post pics here, it's guaranteed is going to be food porn ;) And you are right, they're perfect for starters, specially fried, frying them is the way to go if you are starting and is also the best way to cook them ;)

I am like Tangela and would love some help in the pastry department. The only dough I have made was some pizza dough many, many years ago. The pictures you provided are pleasing to the eyes and undoubtedly more pleasing to the palate. I can understand how " the empanadas" got everyone all "excited", myself included.

Since there are so easy to make, I guess I will be looking up the recipe online. Hopefully, I will be able to return with a good report of my success.

We don't have a deep frier but we do have a wok. Does that work? I feel like we should get a deep frier but I wouldn't use it enough times to justify the purchase. Plus I'm trying to eat healthier so it's not like a deep frier will help me do that.

i use a pan, hehehe! So yeah, I'm pretty sure the Wok would do. I don't have deep frier either, I also can't justify that purchase, I don't fry enough things, and when I do I use a simple pan :)

A good shortcrust pastry is an easy start. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/shortcrustpastry_1278. You can make pies and tarts with this. You just mix everything together and chill it. Afterwards, you can do whatever you want with the dough.

This seems simple enough although I worry about the technique. Any time I have to adhere too closely to technique and the like I get a little nervous. Maybe that's why I am a better cook than I am a baker.

I had stopped at the petrol station and they were displayed with written name in the glass shelf. There was a long linę so I did not get to purchase any. :(
