I make my own chocolates to give out as gifts for Christmas, Easter, etc., and I make the outer chocolate coating with melted chocolate and a little shortening which I melt in a pot on the stove. I make a colossal mess every.single.time. and I was wondering if it would be worth purchasing a tempering machine. It's only something that I would use maybe 3 or 4 times a year, but if it makes my life easier and creates a prettier product, then I'm all for it! Has anyone ever tried one before?

Wiltons make a great chocolate melter. It is small compact and super easy to use. The best thing is that it that it coast a fraction of what you would spend on a Chocolate tempering machine. You can find them at any craft store. You might also want to try purchasing melting chocolate , they come in round wafers and melt smother because the are deigned for coating candy.

I don't really see the benefit of using one of these machines vs. just simply making a double boiler on your stove with a pot and a bowl over it. Melted chocolate is still going to make a mess either way. If anything, I would rather stick with the double boiler, since I can throw all the parts in a sink and don't have to worry about electrical cords and such. For what it's worth, I've also heard that those NuWave induction burners are also supposed to be good for stuff like melting chocolates, since they can hold a consistent temperature.
