I've baked my christmas cake for the required length of time, as per the recipe, but the centre is quite cooked when I checked it with a knife. The edges are slightly burnt so I'm worried about putting it back in the oven again. Could I finish it off in the microwave or will this ruin the whole cake?

I would think the microwave would mess up the texture at the very least. I think you meant the center is "not" quite cooked - you could cover the cake with foil, but it might have been a little too late. What did you do? If it's a really dense cake, it's possible the centre would continue to cook a bit on the retained heat (almost like a beef roast) out of the oven. Hard to say without knowing what the recipe was like. Was your baking tin light or dark in color? Sometimes dark pans cook the outside faster as they absorb a lot of heat.
