Cookie Icing

I have a quick question. I just got a recipe and the icing calls for Heating the icing here is what it says. What would be the reason for this. I usually do the same ingredients plus some corn syrup and mix well .

Icing For Cookies

Ingredients:

2 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar

2 tsp. almond flavoring

4 T. milk

1/2 stick soft butter

Instructions:

1. Place all ingredients in a pan over heat and stir until smooth.

2. Dip the tops of the cooled cookies in the icing and sprinkle with colored sprinkles

Warm it to make it dry to the touch when cooled.
A bit of corn syrup prevents the icing from drying up and falling off.
