Dense Cakes

    What could make a cake turn out very dense?

    Too much egg is usually what causes the cake to be too dense. If you are using the called for number of eggs, the eggs you are using may be too big.

    Too much fat, sugar or liquid can make for a dense cake.
    What was the recipe?

    Either of the above will certainly make your cake dense, or it could be that you're using plain flour instead of self-raising, or omitting baking powder or bicarb. Any number of things could do it really. Check your recipe again and check everything you did; you'll probably see that you did something wrong when putting the recipe together.
