Freezing cookies

Is it a good idea to freeze cookies? I always make large batches and end up with them going soft as we didn't eat them fast enough (I'm a single mom to one so there are only two of us). Is it OK to freeze cookies or would that ruin them? Perhaps I should freeze half the dough and then defrost it later and make smaller batches? What's the best way to go about it?
