Ginger bread frosting?

Does anyone know a good recipe for gingerbread icing? I would like to make some gingerbread cookies with my children for Halloween. I always remember as a child, when we went to visit an uncle, we would stop at this bakery and pick up a gingerbread cookie with icing on it. I would love to make these home made but don't know the recipe for the icing. Any ideas anyone?

Gingerbread cookies usually have royal icing as the decoration. It's also used to glue together gingerbread houses. Here's a good royal icing recipe.

Hmm...yes, I have to agree with ACSAPA on this one, they traditionally have royal icing and if you got them from a bakery I'd imagine that would be the most likely flavor you're looking for. There are plenty of good recipes to be found for it, too .

Oh, wonderful! That recipe ACSAPA linked has an alternative to raw egg whites. Whew!

I know of another icing recipe that substitutes egg whites with lemon juice, but I don't know if that'd be sturdy enough as royal, so meringue (or cornstarch? Gelatine?) should be good too.
