What spices can go in cakes?

I was wondering, one of those moment when you sit there thinking why am I thinking this? and the thought that occurred to me was which spices can go in cakes?

Obviously vanilla and cinnamon work but what others work? Is Vanilla even considered to be a spice in this instance? Would saffron go into a cake?

Clove, I often use clove for my carrot cakes. They'd not be the same without it. Clove is a must when baking a carrot cake, otherwise it might not taste the way it should. I'd be careful with the quantity though, that is a very strong spice.
