Beads?

I see a lot of cakes decorated with "beads." What are the colorful beads made out of? Is it candy?

I think these beads are candy or hard sugar that is high polished to a shine.You have to be careful because eventhough they are edible they can be quite hard. There are some that are round chocolate in a candy coating and others have piped or fondant beads.

Yes. I agree that they can be hard, but as long as you are aware that they will be crunchy, you should be fine. I like to decorate little chocolate covered cherry Hershey kisses mice for Christmas time and I use the beads as the eyes and nose. They are a great way to be creative and they look quite elegant on cakes and cupcakes!
