This is my all-time favorite dessert. You can fiddle with it as much as you want, turning it into a fancy high dollar dessert or a simple comfort food. Plus, you can make as much or as little from scratch as you want and use any fruit you want.

Basic recipe:
layer in the following order: Poundcake, custard, whipped cream, fruit
repeat layers until it's as tall as you want

Espresso strawberry trifle:

Pour some espresso (instant granulated espresso works fine) into a plate
Slice poundcake into 1" thick slices
Dip poundcake on both sides in the espresso
Slice strawberries into thin strips
Arrange following the above layering from the basic recipe
Garnish with mint

Yum!!

Trifles are my go to when A. There are a lot of people and i don't want to make a lot of cake, and 2. when my cake falls apart. I don't have the pics on this computer, but my two faves were Butter Rum (vanilla custard, yellow cake, butter rum sauce) and Cookies and Cream (vanilla custard, choc cake, oreo crumbles). I use a 1.5' tall vase and they look amazing!
