Cake icing question

Hey guys, I am trying to make a cake this weekend and wanted to get some input on the type of frosting i should use for a french vanilla cake.

My plan is to have two 9” round cakes stacked on-top of each other with a vanilla buttercream in between the two cakes and a chocolate fudge icing on the outside. Im open to suggestions. Thanks!

For me, French vanilla flavor is richer and somewhat a "custardy" flavor. I would go with a regular vanilla buttercream where not too much vanilla extract in it, maybe half what it calls for. I think if you use chocolate, or even cream cheese frostings it would overpower the cake's delicate French vanilla flavor. Definitely something mild would be best in my opinion.

Your plan sounds delicious! A classic vanilla buttercream is a great choice for the filling, as it complements the French vanilla cake perfectly.
For the outer layer, chocolate fudge frosting is a fantastic option. The contrast between the light and dark flavors is always a crowd-pleaser.
If you want to try something a little different, you could consider a cream cheese frosting or a Swiss meringue buttercream for the outer layer. Both of these frostings are incredibly smooth and creamy and they would pair well with the French vanilla cake.
Ultimately, the best frosting for your cake is the one that you enjoy the most. So, don't be afraid to experiment and find your favorite combination.
