How to prevent a soggy cake?

When I bake a cake, I find frosting too thick to cover it in, so I like using whipped cream to decorate the cake because it's lighter and still sweet. When I do this and put it in the fridge, it always makes the cake soggy. Does anyone know how to prevent that?

Hi Janie,
You could do a super thin crumb coat with regular buttercream and then put the whipped cream on top of that.
