I have been looking to re-create a pound cake that my grandmother made. The problem is that I suspect I can't!

The recipe itself had to be a pretty basic one. The biggest problem is this: her had a THICK crust on it when it came out of the oven. She had a gas oven, with "wet" natural gas (she lived IN an oil field, and they got unprocessed natural gas for their heating and cooking). I was not old enough to remember a recipe or anything other than the beautiful golden color of the inside and the dark brown thick crust.

My dad has been talking about the cake for a long time, and I would like to see if I could duplicate it.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

It sounds like the thick crust might have come from using a gas oven and natural gas. To replicate it, try baking your pound cake at a lower temperature (around 325°F) and using a darker or cast iron pan, which can help create a thicker crust. You might also let the cake cool in the pan before removing it. Adjusting the recipe slightly, like increasing the sugar or butter, could also help. Good luck with your baking!
