No flavor. What am I doing wrong?

I am making Peppernuts from a family recipe for the first time. My dough taste great with all the flavors I remember, however once I bake them there is absolutely NO flavor. You cannot taste any of the anise or anything ….. all of my ingredients are fresh and not expired.

It sounds like your spices might not be coming through as strong after baking. You might want to try adding a bit more of the anise or other spices to the dough before baking. Also, check if you're baking at the right temperature and for the right amount of time. Sometimes, spices lose their punch over time, so using fresh spices or increasing the amount can also help. Make sure the spices are well mixed into the dough, and letting the dough rest before baking might improve the flavor too.
