When I was a kid a pie was considered fancy if it had woven pie crust on top. Lately I've been seeing more and more actual decorations on them, usually by using cookie cutters on the crust. Here are some amazing designs:

Oh if only I could be so creative. I really love the lace heart crust! That is such a good idea. I am also partial to the holly leaf crust as well.

Looove the third and fourth ones! My mum often makes pies with decorated crusts - I've got a cookie cutter in the shape of a moose, so I remember she once made a steak pie with pastry moose on top of it, and she also made one with stars. I don't make pie often enough to have tried any fancy designs myself though.

How lovely! I don't have much experience with pies, and I'm not sure I could pull something like this off. Like cefmac I don't make pies often enough to invest in special tools. But I have PLENTY of cookie cutters!

Wow these are so creative and lovely. I don't make too many pies but what wonderful ideas. I do have many cookie cutters and could get some doilies at the dollar store. Now, see what you've done, I just have to make a pie...hehe

Beautiful - although I got a shock when I scrolled down and saw the final image!! :D

I like the idea of rolling a paper doily onto the pastry to get the pattern, although I wonder how well it keeps that shape after being in the oven?

Here's one of miniature apple pies: I'm not entirely sure how they got the apple slices into the rose shape (there must be some trick to it) but they must have used an apple slicer:

I think the octopus pie is hilarious. I don't really make these type of pies.
Mine usually involve refrigeration and some kind of pudding or custard filling.
But I appreciate the talent and attention to detail involved in making these.

I'm not exactly sure how she did this one. Maybe she used a pasta maker to make the dough strips.

Some of those are just mind-blowing! I would never have the patience to do something as intricate as that. I particularly like the flower-shaped one (that's in the post with the shamrock one), and the one with the leaves around the edge.

Wow. This Pinterest pinner called this an Edelweiss Cherry Pie.
This is really pretty.

These pies are all so beautiful! Unfortunately, I lack the creativity to do something that unique and cool!
I will say that I have "cheated" to make my pies look extra unique and special. I have bought pre-made pie dough and used small cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the dough and place it on top of the pie. Then I baked it. It turned out wonderfully! it just wasn't homemade. :)

The pies are so pretty. I like the pie with the star in the middle. I think all of the pies turned out amazing. You can be so creative with a cookie cutter. The octopus pie is so unique.
