Very quick question. I've done my hygiene training and one thing it says it having a split sink for hand and dish washing. I'm baking small cakes from my kitchen and have done everything else to get the kitchen up to standard but changing the sink is not one of them. Is the upstairs bathroom suitable for hand washing? Any other ideas?

You need to contact the health department in your county to ask what the requirement is for home kitchens. In the US, the second sink requirement for home kitchens is waived in lieu of other sanitation requirements.

Hey there! Great to hear you’re getting everything set up for your home baking business! In the UK, for food businesses operating from home, it's essential to follow proper hygiene standards, but you do have some flexibility.

While it's always ideal to have a separate sink for hand washing in the kitchen, if that’s not possible, you can usually use an alternative like your upstairs bathroom sink. Just make sure it’s easily accessible and that you have soap and hygienic drying methods (like paper towels) nearby. You should also try to minimize the risk of cross-contamination, so keep the bathroom clean and ideally designate it for hand washing while you’re baking.

It might also be worth checking with your local environmental health office, as they can give you specific guidance based on your setup. Good luck with your cakes!
