I got this cakee/parfait thing at a bakery. The best part was the frosting. It looked like whipped cream, but it wasn't.

Its hard to describe, but go with me here. It tasted like meringue. It had a distinctive suguarly bite, like merangue, but it was as soft as frosting.

Was it just meringue or some kind of meringue basted buttercream?

Possibly mascarpone Chantilly icing.

It's made with mascarpone cheese and heavy whipping cream for a light airy icing. It’s stabilized with gelatin. My go to icing for most cakes.

It sounds like you might have had a frosting known as "Swiss meringue buttercream." This type of buttercream is made by dissolving sugar into egg whites and heating them before whipping them into a glossy meringue. Then, softened butter is added, creating a smooth, silky frosting that's not as sweet as traditional buttercream. It holds some of the light, airy texture of meringue, which might explain the distinctive sugary bite and softness you described. It's a favorite for many because it's less sweet but still rich and creamy!
